To keep children safe and reintegrate them into the community, HOPE’87 initiated an education programme for underprivileged working and street children. The project aims at providing basic education to Bangladeshi children who due to their living conditions – street kids and working kids – would regularly not be able to go to school. To this purpose a night school was established which uses locally available resources. At the beginning, 300 street children were selected from Old Dhaka City to attend evening classes in the “Night School”. Most of these children were working in small factories during daytime and were thus not able to attend a regular school. Now they receive a formal primary education in the Night School from 6pm to 8.30pm, 6 days a week. They are provided with free services like school uniforms, books and other educational materials. Moreover, the children have the opportunity to participate in educational excursions and annual sports competitions. Through this programme, these children are enabled to attend a secondary level of education and receive support in order to escape the vicious circle of poverty and illiteracy.
Project Background:
According to national and international reports, about 7 million children are involved in hazardous and risky work in order to maintain their livelihood. They are often deprived of fundamental needs like proper food, education and even clothes.
